Brick slips, copings, kerbs, paviours, setts are bedded in a mortar to ensure they stay in position. The mortar is to act as a strong adhesive, gluing the component to the substrate. By enhancing its performance the mortar is better able to resist attack from physical stress such as impact and trafficking, the effects of weathering including water penetration, frost, freeze / thaw cycling, exposure to UV light.
Mortars and primers are available in site batched and prepacked form to create powerful adhesives to bed and secure such components. A range of ultra-rapid strength gain mortars can achieve all of this within just one hour of mixing, allowing, for example, roads to be opened to normal traffic loads just 60 minutes after bedding blocks and kerbs.
