Dealing with flood damaged screeds

From the Technical Manager’s desk….

“I took a call from Hull City Council.

Due to flood damage the screeds within a school need to be replaced. They need the class rooms ready for the new term in September.

The Client’s question was “What additives do Ronacrete manufacture to help the new screeds dry out quickly?”.

I advised the use of one of the Uniscreed products, Standard, Rapid or FastDry. As a result the screeding contractor will purchase Uniscreed Rapid. This will give them a screed dry enough after 4 days to overlay with vinyl, well within their return to school date.

The gentleman from Hull City Council said the problem was widespread and that we should broadcast the information on Uniscreed and its fast drying properties for new screeds to others, as there are many suffering the same problem.”

When laying floors there are many important issues, thickness, strength, traffic, performance, durability. Speed and time are also important; often time is at a premium and delays incurred on a contract up to the time that screeds are laid have a knock-on effect further limiting the time available to lay the screeds and give them sufficient time to develop strength and dry out before they can be overlaid with the final finish.

Uniscreed helps fast track the process by accelerating the speed at which they develop strength and dry out. If a screed is overlaid with vinyl too soon after finishing it, the residual moisture in the screed can cause the vinyl to blister and bubble. And when time is at a premium and pressure is on to open the floor to traffic, there is a risk of this happening. But incorporate Uniscreed Standard, Rapid or FastDry in the screed and the drying time for a 50mm screed drops dramatically, from 50 days (7 weeks) to 8 days, 4 days and 36 hours respectively. This huge time saving is a major benefit to contractor and client.

Uniscreed modified screeds are typically laid at 35 to 50mm and thicker. Of course there are other products in our armoury which allow much thinner screeds to be laid, for example Ronafix to a minimum depth of only 6mm. These must be laid bonded on to structurally sound concrete.

As well as speeding the drying process we can also offer surface dpm’s (damp proof membranes) which are applied on top of the new screed and stops the moisture in the screed affecting the vinyl. These products are Monoprufe and Ronadeck Epoxy DPM. But they are unlikely to be needed when using Uniscreed.

So, to summarise, if you need quick dry screeds, Uniscreed is the answer.
