Ferry fast repair for Poole Harbour ferry
It was a race against the spring tides for specialist contractors REL, when faced with the task of repairing the Sandbanks chain ferry slip way at the mouth of Poole Harbour in Dorset.
The lower half of the ramp leading to the floating bridge had suffered from the ferry’s tireless runs between Sandbanks and the Studland beach, every 15 minutes. It required a reliable mortar which would harden before the tide turned, so consulting civil and structural engineers, Gifford and Partners, specified Ronacrete’s RonaFloor Repair 1 Hour 6-50mm which reaches high strengths within the hour.
“We had to wait until the spring tides, when water levels at the mouth of Poole Harbour were lowest, but even then, the turn around was very quick—in the end we had less than an hour to complete the work” explained Dave Leggett, Director of REL.
RonaFloor Repair 1 Hour mortars and fine concretes reach high strength within just 60 minutes and work at low temperature down to –10°C, so it was ideal for use in this tidal area. Within one hour of mixing, the material gained sufficient strength to take foot and vehicle traffic including cars, lorries and even fork-lift trucks.
This product range has an established track record since 1981, and has been used for similar applications around the British coast. The contractors were provided with a reliable, quality product and the chain ferry slip way was repaired overnight, with business as usual at 7o’clock the next morning.
RonaFloor Repair 1 Hour mortars can be used as thin as 3mm and as thick as 150mm with a grade to suit most types of floor repair.
An “add water” grade is now available.
