Ronafix screed for rubbish floor
A Ronafix modified topping laid in May 1977 to provide a new heavy duty, oil resistant surface to an inclined concrete roadway at Westminster City Councils Central Cleansing Depot, Gatliffe Road, London SW1 is still performing well.
The ramp connects ground and first floors at the depot and is in constant use by fully laden refuse collection vehicles. The traction produced by the heavy weight lorries as they climbed the incline had caused the breakdown of the original concrete surface.
Ronafix mix design B high strength granite screed was selected by the Council as best meeting their requirements for resistance to heavy trucking and attack from oil and diesel. Surface preparation involved removing the original, damaged concrete, scabbling back to a mechanically sound surface, removing oil and grease and priming with a Ronafix : cement grout.
The topping designed to Ronafix mix B was then laid to the roadway at a depth of approximately 19mm. The surface finish of the screed was heavily textured in order to provide a grip even in wet and icy conditions. The screed also offered good resistance to freeze thaw cycling.
Preparation of the surface and application of the screed was carried out by Concrete & Resin Surfaces Ltd.
In the 30+ years that the screed has been down, an estimated 500,000 tonnes of traffic has passed over the surface.
